We’re very proud to once again share the design by a BGC friend and local artist. This year we have included their updated interpretation of the Progress Pride Flag, originally created in 2018 by Daniel Quasar to represent Inclusivity, Progression, and Visibility. The Progress Pride Flag acknowledges People of Colour, Trans, and 2SLGBTQIA+ folks by including the trans flag (pink, blue, white) and black and brown stripes within the Pride Flag to recognize other marginalized groups within the greater community. As we progress, so does the Pride Flag; with the revised version of Quasar’s design by Valentino Vecchietti in 2021, to now include the intersex symbol (purple circle on a yellow background).
We’re looking forward to wearing these during Vancouver’s Pride Festival and throughout the year to show our commitment to creating an environment where gender-diverse staff, kids and youth feel safe, welcomed, valued and respected every day. It’s important to BGC to make these shirts as accessible as possible to all who would like one. BGC is supplementing the total cost to bring the price down to $10.00 per shirt. If you know someone who would like one but is unable to pay the cost, connect directly with me.
Pride month arose from a need to protest against discrimination, hate, and violence of 2SLGBTQIA+ community. Today, there is an escalating climate of transphobia, homophobia, and racism, which targets and oppresses trans and racialized 2SLGBTQIA+ folks. It is crucial that we continue to speak out and stand together in creating safety, inclusion, and visibility both within BGC and in our communities.
